    Natural resources of Afgaistan:

natural gas, petroleum, coal, copper, chromite, talc, barites, sulfur, lead, zinc, iron ore, salt, precious and semiprecious stones

I think they want to bring an oil pipeline through the country from Russia too to make oil transport from sibera easier.

How would someone find out? About oil? Well the reason people want Afghanistan so badly is because they want to build a pipeline to transport oil. I doubt that there is a significant amount of oil in Afghanistan or they probably would have found it by now. If they were to look intentionally for oil they would have to send out teams to do seismic tests and to do that you have to dig and lay charges. Well I lived in Afghanistan and one thing you don’t do there is dig. There are land mines EVERYWHERE. So until the land mines are cleaned up no one is going to be doing to much seismic there.

As for precious metals there is lots of Silver, Lapis, and stones like sapphires and rubies. I got a really pretty star Sapphire there and lots of Lapis.
