I’m curious why my CIBC precious metal funds are going down so radically when the price of gold is so high?

It’s the other way around. Gold gets high when funds go down because people et nervous in the markets so they gravitate towards things like Gold that are never going to *suddenly* lose value (like the DOW did today!). It’s tangible security. =)

Commodities tend to trade inversely to equities (stocks), which includes not only precious metals, but oil, nat gas, etc.

because gold isn’t the only precious metal.

and a lot of people have probably been selling their interests in mutual funds, which means that the managers have had to keep a lot of cash on hand to accommodate this, so they have to pass up good investment opportunities.
